Do We Really Need Another Video Editor? A Look at Meta’s Edits

Meta has just dropped a new app called Edits and it’s everything you need…to feel underwhelmed.

It’s not the end for Edits, however. The app is in beta and it does have one feature that stands out from the lackluster repertoire.

Here are A.I. Juice’s honest thoughts on Meta’s latest drop.

What Is Edits?

Let’s first go over where Edits shines.

The app’s Cutout feature lets you, well, cut out an object in a video.

By simply tapping Cutout while in edit mode, then selecting a video, you can remove the background from the video and easily add your own background.

This feature alone makes it worth your time to download the app.

Other good things about Edits:

  • AI-Powered Editing: From animating still images to changing backgrounds and outfits, Edits leverages A.I. to simplify complex editing tasks.
  • High-Quality Camera: Capture professional-grade footage directly within the app.
  • Creative Inspiration Tab: Stay ahead of trends with curated content ideas and popular audio suggestions.
  • Collaborative Tools: Work seamlessly with your team by sharing drafts and managing projects within the app.

👎 Cons

The first glaring issue we have with Edits is the lack of features commonly found in video editing software.

You can’t add transitions between clips, and the animations offered are too basic.

Some animations are nifty enough but it’s 2025 and Meta should do better.

Other cons:

  • Mobile-Only: Lacks a desktop version, which might limit some users.
  • No Templates: Might be daunting for beginners who prefer starting with templates.
  • Early Stages: As a new app, it may have some bugs and limited features initially. We discovered the app had a bug where we couldn’t hear the background music (we tested on an Android, specifically on a Galaxy S24) while we played clips inside edit mode. We then had to hit mute on the music, then unmute to hear it again.
Meta Edits notes feature - artificial intelligence for content creators

The Edits app comes with a note-taking feature, but do we really need one?

Verdict: Is This Juice Worth the Squeeze?

Take away the Cutout feature and what’s left? Not much.
Edits by Meta feels like the minimalist cousin of CapCut who showed up to the content party with instant noodles and no seasoning.

Sure, it’s free. That’s always a plus.
And yes, it’s simple. Really simple.

If you’re new to video editing and just want to trim, tap, and publish, this app won’t overwhelm you. It’s built for speed, not style.

But if you’re coming from CapCut or even Canva, brace yourself. You’ll feel the downgrade.

Animations? Barely there.
Transitions? Limited.
Customization? Don’t get your hopes up.

The basics are there, technically. But they don’t perform well.
Like a car that runs, but only in first gear.

If you’re in a rush and just need something quick, Edits will do.
But if you want range, features, or flair, look elsewhere fast.
